7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development is a European reseach programme with a total budget of over € 50 billion. This money is spent on grants to research actors all over Europe and beyond, in order to co-finance research, technological development and demonstration projects. Grants are determined on the basis of calls for proposals and a peer review process, which are highly competitive.

FP7 is constituted of five specifics programs. One of them, cooperation, is the core of all the programme, representing two thirds of the overall budget. It fosters collaborative research across Europe and other partner countries through projects by transnational consortia of industry and academia. Research will be carried out in ten key thematic areas, the most important of them is Health. The objective of health research under FP7 is to improve the health of European citizens and boost the competitiveness of health-related industries and businesses, as well as address global health issues.
